Skin Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a commonly used dermatology procedure that treats certain skin lesions by applying extreme cold to targeted areas. It is an effective and minimally invasive skin treatment used to remove abnormal or unwanted tissue while preserving surrounding healthy skin.

Skin cryotherapy is performed by an experienced dermatologist within our consultant-led private dermatology centre at The Forbury Clinic. The procedure is quick, precise and suitable for a range of benign and precancerous skin conditions.

What Is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy for skin involves the application of liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue. The extreme cold causes controlled damage to the targeted cells, which then gradually break down and are replaced by healthy skin during the healing process.

This form of dermatology treatment is widely used for lesions that are superficial and well-defined. It can often be performed during the same appointment following clinical assessment.

What Conditions Can Cryotherapy Treat?

Skin cryotherapy is commonly used for:

Your dermatologist will assess whether cryotherapy is appropriate for your specific lesion or whether an alternative private dermatology treatment would be more suitable.

What Happens During the Procedure?

During cryotherapy, liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the lesion using a fine spray device or probe. The freezing process usually lasts only a few seconds per area treated.

You may feel a brief stinging or burning sensation during application. After treatment, the skin may appear red or swollen, and a small blister can form before the area heals naturally over one to two weeks.

What Is the Recovery Time?

Most patients resume normal activities immediately after cryotherapy. The treated area may scab or peel as it heals, which is part of the natural recovery process.

Healing time depends on the size and location of the lesion, but most areas settle within 7 to 14 days. Your dermatologist will provide aftercare advice to reduce irritation and promote smooth healing.

Is Cryotherapy Safe?

Cryotherapy is a well-established and safe skin procedure when performed by a qualified dermatologist. Minor side effects such as temporary redness, swelling or mild discomfort are common and usually resolve quickly.

Rarely, slight pigment changes or minor scarring can occur, particularly in darker skin tones. These risks will be discussed during your consultation.

Cryotherapy FAQs

  • Is cryotherapy painful?

You may experience a short stinging sensation during freezing, but discomfort is usually mild and temporary. Most patients tolerate the procedure well without the need for anaesthetic.

  • How many sessions will I need?

Some lesions respond after a single treatment. Others, particularly thicker warts or keratoses, may require more than one session for complete removal.

  • Will the treated lesion come back?

In many cases, cryotherapy permanently removes the lesion. However, certain conditions such as viral warts may recur, and follow-up treatment may be required.

  • Can cryotherapy be used on the face?

Yes, in appropriate cases. Your dermatologist will assess skin type, lesion location and cosmetic considerations before recommending treatment.
